Independent Politics
Though politics in the United States has been largely dominated by the two-party system, there have been many independent voters since our nation’s beginnings. Independent voters don’t see themselves as an actual party. Rather, they strive to open up politics and move it away from a bi-partisan form of government. However, some Independents have attempted to create their own party just so they can have a better chance in the political arena. George Washington was the only president technically elected as an Independent, and several other Independents have run as presidential candidates over the past few decades. Closed primaries, exclusion from debates, and the solidarity of the two-party system cause obstacles for Independent candidates. Independents claim support from George Washington’s condemnation of political parties, and they see themselves as vital for preserving the Constitution.
